The Ascension

Radiant Ascension

Overview:

The Ascension is an empire of secrets, and an empire so well hidden that it existed beneath the gaze of some of the most skilled scientists and mystics without them even so much as sensing a trace of its existence.

Recently breaking a 6 thousand year silence, the Ascension rose in a sharp and deadly ascension to the eyes of the Greater Galaxy. For those living in their Veils, it was a deadly occasion, as the Veils, reality to those living upon it, tore and were allowed to dissipate. The Darelan Empire, proud and strong, was the last in a long series of empires to collapse at the rise of the Ascension.

Quiet and powerful, independent of all need for any trade between it and the outside world, the Ascension is a new yet ancient player in the games of galactic politics and intrigue, a game that is played by the Ascension solely, it seems, for the amusement value it provides. It is an empire filled with curiosity, sardonic amusement, and a host of secrets so deeply hidden that none but the Ascensions highest ranks know anything of it.

Immigration, Naturalization & Tourism

The idea of immigration and naturalization is an idea foreign to the Ascension. Once an outsider, always an outsider remains the rule. Yet, there are exceptions to this rule. Former Vestis Serina Breda was Ordained and given full citizenship in the Ascension. (Note: This is the sole exception to the rule on record)

Law Level

The law level of the Ascension is high and simple. No exceptions to the law are tolerated, and the Vetra are expected to carry out the law to the fullest extent possible.

The law is lenient towards tourists, with one exception. No entry into the Radiant Ring or Shining Ring without invitation is permitted. All attempts to enter will be met with deadly force.

Q-dex:

T 000.1111/001.588 M 000.1111/001

Lies and masquerades have hidden the reality of this quantum zone for untold millennia. It has taken the form of an Astrological zone, a Particle zone, and more that we of the Omnet have not discovered. In reality, it has always been an Aberrant zone, though this has always been cloaked with such skill as to be indistinguishable to all known sensors.

The exact nature of the quantum zone is unknown, except that it follows no known ordering of possibilities. The material of chaos forms everything within this zone. It seems to be deadly to all others, but the Bright Ones and the Ascendants themselves are totally immune to the destructive effects of chaos. Chaos as a material is both energy, essence, matter and mana at the same time, yet, conflicting with that observation is the fact that it is none of them. It is as if the material is malleable to shifts in the quantum state of the zone. The Ascendants have mastered the art of shifting the quantum states within their zone, and have learned to shape it to their will. Over a smaller area, the Bright Ones too have learned to accomplish much with their own less powerful ability to shift quantum states.

The chaos structure of the Ascension leads the Omnet to believe that in this aberrant zone, all the possibilities simultaneously exist and emerge from the Void constantly. It is this rare ability that grants the Ascension such ability to alter reality and to create quantum zone simulations. They are not actually creating anything new, merely reordering the possibilities to simulate whatever quantum zone they wish to simulate.

The zone is still deadly to outsiders, with the exception of two stations on the edges of Ascension space. These two stations, and the Astrological zone of the planet Sendar, the Brennan Particle zone, and the Kaas Biological zone are the only places where non-Ascension citizens may venture safely without need for an Ascendant or Bright One to negate the effects of chaos. These zones, however, are girded by the natural chaos of the zone, and thus require Ascension aid to traverse.

The Omnet has begun warning all foreigners not to enter Ascension space without first obtaining permission from the Illuminated Ring or the Shining Ring. To enter their space without such permission is to be destroyed by the ambient chaos. Only Ascendants and Bright Ones can grant protection to a ship to prevent it from being rendered instantly into chaos as it crosses the quantum front. Though knowledge exists of transchaos drives that can prevent that, sale of such drives is prohibited by the Radiant Ring, and no models of those drives exist anywhere other than Ascension space.

The storms of this zone have been arbitrarily placed into the 1111 level, as no known quantum storms of any uncontrolled sort have ever happened in the Ascension zone. Relations with the outside world are cool, stability is high, and the relationship this empire shares with the Omnet has been pleasant. The Lifeforms guide has been omitted due to the sensitive nature of this particular label. However, there are two main types of sentient life in this zone. The first are the Ascendants, beings formed of the same chaos stuff that makes up the quantum zone. They are the sole native lifeforms existing within this zone. The second, the Bright Ones, are merely humans with the unique ability to survive within the natural chaos of the zone. Whether this is an abnormal effect of leveling or some other factor is still unknown.

By far the most important and amazing fact of this strange zone is the presence of a nearly perpetual storm within the heart of the Ascension. Appearing to be both a blackvoid storm and a huge area of quantum irregularity, the storm is referred to as the Birthplace, supposedly the location where all Ascendants Awaken.

Technology:

The technology used by the Ascendants is totally unknown. It has been theorized that the native chaos makes technology totally unusable, and thus, all technology are actually magical in nature. Non-Ascension technology brought into a simulated Q-zone work perfectly, though.

The Illuminated Ring, while capable for the most part of wielding chaos, generally choose to exist on one of several realities, depending on their inclinations. There, they utilize technology appropriate to the simulated zone they exist in. They use particle emitters in Brennan, and astrological force devices in Sendar, while biological lifeforms dominate in Kaas. Note that these simulations are still affected by the natural powers of the Bright Ones and Ascendants, and most Ascendants disdain the use of simulated technology, no matter how useful it may be. The only concession to normal technology that has been readily accepted by the Ascendants are synthetics, which were previously bought in secrecy from trusted suppliers. While the Ascendants have their own version of synthetics, referred to as Oraculars, none have been offered to the Omnet for research, and all requests for a working model of the Oraculars have been met with silence.

In addition, the sheer level of knowledge the Bright Ones have in various technological fields is a major source of income for the Ascension, in addition to the massive and almost unlimited amounts of blackvoid found in this aberrant zone. Among the fields commonly known to the Bright Ones are etheric (Energy Bipolar), particle (Matter Bipolar), biomass (Programmed Matter Linear), atomic (Charged Matter Linear), elemental (Life Nodal), Vessel (Matter Nodal), and energy flow (Charged Life Linear).

Magic:

The magic of the Ascension is based upon the manipulation of chaos. It is the basis of their society, and they use magic almost constantly in their daily lives. The magic of an Ascendant is in part linked to his very existence as a being of chaos, or beings of purest quantum fluctuations. In another part, it is linked to quantum fluctuations, which are here at least limited in their scope, and under the control of the High Ascendants. Another part of the magic is linked to the age of a particular Ascendant.

The older the Ascendant, the more Equations he knows, and the more power and changes he can make upon the surroundings. The most powerful Ascendants are the High Ascendants, and they are the most ancient of all the Ascendants, having Awakened 9 billion years ago. The power they wield is almost unbelievable, having simulated a perfect quantum reality for millennia.

The lesser Ascendants and Bright Ones are in turn able to accomplish significant feats, and lesser Ascendants can be considered as lesser only when compared with the High Ascendants. A lesser Ascendant can wipe out entire fleets, reshape reality over a span of several light-years, and construct a simulated reality for a moon.

Bright Ones, by virtue of the fact they are not fully formed of chaos, can only accomplish smaller feats, but are no less dangerous. They are fully capable of destroying anyone foolish enough to insult them, and nothing known to the Omnet can stop them. Regular shields do not serve to protect one from the rage of even the least Bright One, nor does armor of any kind. The Bright Ones tend to prefer to use more regular technology and magics, primarily because they must expend great personal energies to shift chaos and manipulate it.

As a result, they live within simulated magical zones, such as a Ley Line zone, a Weave zone, a Vibrant zone and simulate around themselves countless others. Here, they use the mana and essence extracted from the chaos stuff to work, and cast spells as any ordinary mage, wizard, or witch/warlock would. The more powerful Bright Ones and the Ascendants again disdain such use of crude magics and will have nothing to do with it.

However, as noted in the technology section, the Ascension has a deep store of knowledge in various fields where their technology and magics have been used for extended periods of time. This is of course outside the scope of this entry.

Size:

There are a total of six stars orbiting two rings of purest Chaos in the center of the zone. The center of the Rings is occupied by a significant Blackvoid storm, which occasionally emits smaller or medium size blackvoid storms that break out of the Ascension space to deposit blackvoid elsewhere. This storm was in all likelihood the father of the Chanith-Obem Storm which deposited significant resources of blackvoid in the Relantrii space. The center is so unstable that not even the Bright Ones dare enter, even if not for the proscription on travel into the Rings. Only Ascendants enter the Shining Ring, and High Ascendants are believed to dwell in the Radiant Ring. None can be certain, however, as no one known has ever had the chance to enter the Radiant Ring.

The two rings that orbit this storm are the Radiant Ring on the inner side, close to the blackvoid storm, and the Shining Ring, closer to the Illuminated Systems, where all the stars are located. Both are inhabited only by the Ascendants, both lesser and High.

The Ascensions stars are arranged into a hexagonal pattern surrounding the two Rings. All Illuminated Ring members live on the Planets and Moons of the Ascension or on the three stations of the Golath-Val. The whole assembly of stars slowly circles the Rings. Surrounding each star are 6 planets, a total of 36 in the entire Ascension. Surrounding each planet in turn are 6 moons, again forming a basically hexagonal pattern, for a total of 216 moons all together.

The names of the 6 stars and 36 planets are:

Stars
Planets
Venya Uktar Sendar Serin Vorth Khizan Feyruth
Quenne Garaen Anqet Alyx Khari Kaas Dorcath
Shondar Sherikha Verdanth Kar Kai Jiqui Julius
Vortag Marius Venrak Jenzrak Ghotlak Centrix Khal-tar
Kallas Therim Seraphim Chenal JennDarr Cervai Eras
Kahlen Rictral Sentra Vecia Olah Jendar Scital

Population:

It is impossible to come up with a proper population count as the Ascendants are unwilling to disclose their total population. However, it is estimated that there may be about 1 million Lesser Ascendants, and perhaps 10 billion Bright Ones.

As Lesser Ascendant is rather a misguided term, assume from now on that any mention of Ascendant refers to the lesser Ascendants unless specifically stated to the contrary.

Climate and Geography:

The climate and geography of the zone is variable depending will of the local Ascendants, and sometimes on the decisions of the Ver-Vetra and his Sa-Vetra. Rarely does anything remain stable for long periods of time unless the Ascendants will it to be. As all things, including the stars and planets are created by the Ascendants, this is not a trivial thing. The entire stellar systems could simply vanish if the High Ascendants willed it.

However, several planets have a set system of life, and a few have accurate quantum zone simulations. These are:

  • Uktar:

The Bright Ones of Uktar have built a beautiful, shifting world of stunning chaotic shifts, and delicate currents of chaos. The ambient chaos has been shaped into buildings that embody the very idea of chaos at their heart. These beautiful structures shift and change with the times of the day in no set pattern. The Bright Ones living here disdain all technological and magical equipment from the outside, and have a bare minimum of tolerance for tourists.

  • Brennan:

Brennan is one of the six moons orbiting Uktar. Sharply different from the planet it orbits, Brennan has a Particle q-dex simulation surrounding it and some nearby space. The Bright Ones of Brennan have chosen this Particle q-dex as it reminds them of the home they left behind when they became a part of the Ascension.

  • Sendar:

The ambient zone here on this planet has been reshaped to become an Astrological quantum zone. The main power emanates from the core of the planet, and shapes the lives of all beings native to this space. The Bright Ones themselves often pretend that their existence too is shaped by these astrological phenomenon, but in truth, they are not.

The Sendarians construct matter replicators, shifting the ambient matter extracted from chaos to whatever they need, far more efficiently than their own native magics.

  • Kaas:

The planet of Kaas is within a Biological zone simulation, and has bred dozens of different lifeforms to aid the native Bright Ones. Lush forests abound, and huge, delicate flowering plants and beautiful artistic growths fill much of the surroundings. The Bright Ones as a whole live within trees or around the sandy beaches.

Most other planets have climates and geography that shift too often to be accurately recorded. More information will be available soon in supplementary reports.

The final but not the least of the Ascensions ancient and unusual features is the Birthplace. This mysterious storm is the center of Ascension space, and is the place where all Ascendants Awaken. It is in this blackvoid storm that massive deposits of blackvoid can be found, and it is the sole place in the Ascension where none but the High Ascendants enter. It is believed that they are the result of various quantum anomalies that have shaped themselves and given themselves form, the will of Life coming forth from within this Birthplace.

Flora and Fauna:

As a whole, there is no natural occurring flora or fauna with the exception of the Ascendants. Even the Bright Ones are not natives, but are outsiders whose ancestors were Ordained and granted the right to live within the Ascension.

On the worlds of Sendar, Brennan, and Kaas, native lifeforms have been crafted by the Ascendants and Bright Ones to give them a more friendly feel for the Bright Ones living there.

History:

The ancient history of the Ascension must begin with a note that we really do not know much of them. They have no need for much from the outside world, and would be difficult to negotiate with if they themselves did not want to learn about the outside world. Thus, I must state that this history is very fragmentary and suspect because much of the Ascendant's history has not been properly recorded, or translated into human concepts.

The Ages of the Ascension are:

Age of Awakening:

The Age of Awakening is so far in the distant past that only the High Ascendants have been Awake long enough to remember them. This age is considered to be the beginning of all Ascension history, and occurred roughly 2 million years ago with the Awakening of the High Ascendants. The full length of this age is beyond the flow of recorded history, but it is believed by all that the Ascension began when the High Ascendants shook off the primal force that had once ruled them and began fully thinking, self-sentient beings.

The legends speak vaguely of the discovery of the power of the Equations and the grounding of all magical and technological power within the Ascension as having happened in this age, though, as always, accurate records are hard to find. If the High Ascendants   know anything much about this age, they have not made that information public.   \par The ending of this age happened 1.689 million years later, when the first and oldest of the lesser Ascendants emerged from their birthplace in the huge Blackvoid /Chaos storm at the center of the zone.

Age of Rage:

The Age of Rage was witness to cruelties and barbarisms so dark as to defy all belief. This age, which lasted for almost 342,000 years was the age of terror, of pain and monstrous barbarity. They began with the first recorded case of Madness in recorded and accepted history. The Madness, a strange disease that affected several lesser Ascendants, brought with it dark turmoil and a brutal war, perhaps the first in recorded Ascension history.

Referred to as the War in Heaven, it raged over the Ascension for several million years, beginning with the slow but steady progress of the Madness. At first diagnosed as merely the effects of handling too much chaos, it was later to be proven dreadfully wrong.

The disease known as the Madness was the most deadly and dark disease to strike the Ascendants. At first it appeared as a slowness, a rare inability to recall, and a gradual loss of self-control. These effects were witnessed by the Ascendants and ignored, for none could have known that such diseases existed, or even that they themselves might be vulnerable to it. They ignored the warning signs, the gradual increasing number of Mad Ascendants, until at last one Mad Ascendant murdered another, and discovered that upon death, an Ascendants knowledge, power, and Equations could be forcibly stolen from his dying form.

Thus began the War in Heaven. At first, unused to fighting, the Ascendants fell back at every fight against the Mad Ascendants, losing hundreds of their own kind in the process. The Ascendants finally sent appeals to the High Ascendants, secure within the Radiant Ring.

There, a total of ten High Ascendants rose to answer this desperate plead, raging forth in a series of magical battles referred to as The Rage of the Ten. Furious at this despicable acts, the ten did not stop at merely destroying the physical forms of the Mad Ascendants, but also claiming their souls and energy for themselves. The Ten were unstoppable, and soon peace was restored to the Ascension.

Great was the joy of those who had survived, for they thought that peace had been restored to their home. But it was not to be. Darkness took hold in the heart of one of the Ten, and he too began the slide into Madness.

The War in Heaven was resumed. This time, though, it was not fought among mere Ascendants and their masters, the High Ascendants, but between the High Ascendants. It was a time of terror again for those who had survived the destruction of the First War in Heaven, as now they stood not just to lose their lives, but their souls, and the souls of their successors.

The Unnamed One, as he was called, rampaged almost unstopped over all space, unchallenged by all the High Ascendants. For in their research they had come upon a terrible secret.

Those who took the power of a Mad Ascendant would eventually contract the Madness. And for someone to take his power meant that another Mad High Ascendant would come to be. In fear, they let him rage unchecked, until at last they could no longer hide. He was coming for them, and he wanted their power to add to his.

In desperation, they gathered together their power, uniting as they had never done before. Together they met him and defeated him, vanquishing but not destroying him. To avoid the Madness, they sealed him up in a Shroud, blocking his power and draining him of his strength. They hoped that he would eventually shake off the Madness and rejoin them.

The War in Heaven had ended.

The Ascendants returned to their learning, and to the cultural joining that had been their way of life for so long, until the War in Heaven destroyed it. This continued for eons, until again a new event brought change. They pursued Transcendence as they always had, ignoring everything else in that search for pure transcending of all existence, becoming beings of absolute knowledge.

The Veils were created in a strange, bizarre period of time, which again has not been translated properly by the Ascendants. What is known is it was done to protect the then healing Ascension from the outside world. Built to mimic an Astrological zone, they were the most significant act of engineering ever built, and even to this day no Ascendant really understands how they were built. Without the knowledge the High Ascendants alone hold, it seems impossible for anyone to build it anew.

Then came the first of the Bright Ones in 1341 BC. Fleeing a being they called Obem-Dharr, they came to the Veils, and somehow could see the Veils, and beyond, into the Ascension space. This came as a shock to the Ascendants, who took these people from their ship, derelict and drifting without power, and gave them the power to survive within the Ascensions chaotic home. To that end, the High Ascendants broke their silence of eons to create the six stars, and the planets that to this day remain.

After them came yet more, and these too could see the Veils, and were taken to become Bright Ones, gaining training in how to create a new life for themselves. They were to become the core group of the Bright Ones. While smaller numbers of Bright Ones came later, none were as big as these two groups.

The Darelans came with the Shattering of the Suns (1340 BC), but only one could see the Veils, and he was but a child. His name was Ettienne, and he became a great emperor, and made an empire thrive through the Veil. He was succeeded by a host of Imperators, but none had the talent to see the Veils. They ignored the Darelans, for nothing major of note happened to disrupt the Veil.

Age of Restoration:

This age was begun in roughly 2088 AD, when the Farseer first began to notice the interesting fun provided by the Darelan Imperium. He found their views and ideas interesting, and began to delve deeper into the space beyond the Veil.

Following this, the Farseer came to see them as an interesting diversion. Taking on mortal form, he pierced the Veils and became known as Imperator Giolantti. He presided over the last years of the Imperium. Then the Unnamed One broke free, setting in motion the events recorded in the Book of Serina and the Ascensions Rise.

The Ascension officially took over the space formerly claimed by the Darelan Imperium on 2129 AD, ending the reign of the Imperium and beginning the new reign of the Ascension. Officially severing all ties with the League of Stars and beginning new ones with the Union of Stars and the Federated Stellar States, in addition to opening channels to the Fartrade Coalition, this minor empire has also begun to initiate contact with several unspecified empires.

The construction of two immense Portals, one leading to space deep within the heart of the Union of Stars, and another leading to territory just on the boundaries of  Federated Stellar States space was officially begun after deep and closed negotiations with the two major empires, and completed with startling speed. A third Portal to Kalikari Dominion space is rumored to be under construction.

The real Age of Restoration had begun.

Government:

There are three main levels of power in the Ascension. They are:
  •
  • The Radiant Ring
  • The Shining Ring
  • The Illuminated Ring

The Radiant Ring is the center of all power, and inhabits the innermost ring of the Ascension. It is the closest to the chaos and blackvoid storms that rage at the center of the quantum zone. They are the most powerful Ascendants, and the ultimate voice in the Ascension. They back their claims up with the pure power to destroy all opposition to their rule. The total number of High Ascendants are unknown, but theorized to be either three or six. They are said to be those who have almost reached total Transcendence, with near perfect understanding of the laws of the universe and the self. The state of Transcendence is still unknown, and all questions on it have resulted in little or no additional information.

The Shining Ring is the real government concerned with day to day affairs for the Ascension. The central government of the Shining Ring is relatively stable, and is ruled by a council of 18 Vetra, and 1 Kal-Vetra. They formulate the Ascension policy, and maintain the internal order of the Ascension.

Foreigners are most likely to deal with the Illuminated Ring rather than the Shining Ring. The Illuminated Ring is ruled by a Ver-Vetra and a council of 18 Sa-Vetra. They formulate foreign policy, subject to the approval of the Kal-Vetra, and the Valath. Both must approve of a foreign policy statement before any real foreign trade or treaty can be accepted or offered. Unofficial treaties between the Ver-Vetra and outsiders are sometimes possible. In addition, for the most part the Illuminated Ring is granted carte blanche. Almost nothing the Illuminated Ring does is ever canceled by the Shining Ring, who refuse to handle any dealings with the fast moving, rash thinking, and strange beings of the outside world.

Government: Foreign Policy

The Foreign policy of the Ascension is one of plain isolationism coupled with a sense of outward looking curiosity. Very little escapes the attention of the Ascension, and fewer things are permitted to be within their space. They view the Omnet with a mixture of curiosity and amusement. To them, it has been around for so short a time as to be merely a blink of an eye, although the swift rise to power of the Omnet intrigues them. IGNM penetration has been difficult because of the aberrant nature of this zone, but what little that has been possible has been avidly watched by the Bright Ones, and even many of the Lesser Ascendants have shown great curiosity as to the Greater Galaxy. Even to this date, the Ascendants and their governments motives for many things are still unknown. They have little or no interest in expansion, not much interest in trade, and very little interest in most alliances not on their terms. Thus their withdrawal from the League of Stars.

They respect the Major Empires, for the Major Empires have seen a vision and made it real, and made themselves into powers that must be respected on the galactic disc. They have some amusement at the relative youth of all the Major Empires, but respect them all, in a guarded way. They especially respect the Union of Stars and the Federated Stellar States, though no reason has been given. Especial note has been made to build up greater ties with the Union of Stars, though the exact reason for this is still unknown. Rumors exist that the Ascension has begun ties with the Union of Stars, with a petition for client membership within the Union, but Valath Breda has thus far refused to elaborate on the accuracy of those rumors.

As a whole, their relations with other minor empires is rather simple and plain. They are not interested in trade, and ignore most possible research agreements and non-aggression pacts. They are not particularly concerned with the antics of minor empires, with some exceptions. Many of the empires who once had treaties with the Darelan Empire (Imperium) have been granted first rights to negotiate new treaties, an obvious move by the Bright Ones to learn more about the Greater Galaxy. Dealings with the Kalikari Dominion have been specifically made a priority, by order of the Kal-Vetra after a trip into the Radiant Ring, possible proof of High Ascendant involvement.

Government: Domestic Policy

The domestic policy of the Ascension is one of reserved power. They have almost unlimited power, and do not hesitate to use it if forced to. All Vetra are given the authorization to carry out laws to the fullest extent. The Utar police are fully authorized to halt any activity that could harm the Ascension, with whatever force is deemed necessary.

Freedom of speech is an accepted part of Ascension society, but only as far as it does not interfere with the stability of the Ascension as a whole. Any attempt to destabilize the Ascension will be met with deadly force.

Society:

The Ascension is a three leveled society:
  •
  • High Ascendants
  • Ascendants
  • Bright Ones:
    •
    • Houses
    • Domine

The High Ascendants as mentioned, are the center of the Ascension, and do not take an active hand in the handling of the society as a whole.

The Ascendants as a whole exist as a loose group of people with certain codes of honor. There are several different codes, but all share a similar basis: "Do nothing to another Ascendant that you would not visit upon yourself."

The Bright Ones are the one with the most obvious social structures. They are generally divided into Houses and Domines. The Houses are the centerpiece of all Bright One society, and they control much of the power and prestige of the Bright Ones. They were founded as a whole with the coming of the first Bright Ones into the Ascension. Thus far, almost all Bright Ones owe allegiance to one of the Houses.

There are some that disdain the rigid, pristine structure of the Houses, and these have gathered together to form the Domines. Each Domine is considered to be an extended family, and they often control what power the Houses do not, and are more adaptive, innovative, and closer to the Outside. It is the Domines that drive the foreign policy of the Illuminated Ring, and it is they who often encourage the outside world to come within the Ascension.

In addition, Bright One culture is split into several types by choice of living areas, creed, and to a limited extent, ancestry (or which of the groups of Bright Ones a person comes from). This subdivision and detailed analysis is beyond the scope of this entry, but further details will be appended to another report.

The fact lies that no Vetra or Sa-Vetra, or even the Kal-Vetra and Ver-Vetra have ever claimed allegiance to any House, Domine, or Code. They are considered to be exempt from Code, House, and Domine upon taking Ordainment and becoming government members.

Society: Languages

There are two main languages spoken among the Ascension. The Ascendants speak with thought pulses, a form of image/concept/term speech that is remarkably quick, effective, and often blunt. However, it often has the side effect of creating headaches or nausea in humanoids exposed to the pulse language.

The Bright Ones speak a language of their own, not via thoughts, but with normal vocal chords, although thoughts are a perfectly acceptable way to transmit this speech. This speech is similar across all the worlds of the Ascension, although minor differences are noticeable when speaking to long time natives of several worlds.

Society: Religion

The religion of the Ascension has not been studied, but it appears that there is no known religion in use. Ordained often speak of a rapturous trance created by the High Ascendants to test them, but this appears to be secular rather than religious in nature.

Society: Castes

Castes, such as we understand it, do not exist within Ascension space. The closest to a caste structure is the levels of power reached by the various Ascendants, and that does not appear to be much of a caste barrier, merely one of age and power.

The sharpest difference is between the Ascendants and the Bright Ones. The Bright Ones, lacking in the immortality, strength and native ability of the Ascendants, are considered to be a society somewhat separate from the Ascendants.

Within their society, the Bright Ones have a history of social progression, slow but steady advancement within Houses, and a complex structure of honor that at times mimics castes.

Economy:

The economy of the Ascension is still in its infancy. However, the most obvious export thus far is blackvoid. In addition, the manufacturing power of the Ascension is theoretically unlimited. They could manufacture anything and everything they so choose, but do not, primarily because very little is needed that cannot be produced in one or more of the simulated quantum zones.

The few things the Ascension is willing to receive in trade for blackvoid are:

  • Omnium
  • Yardo
  • Information of extreme value

Within the Ascension, trading is primarily barter, with occasional gifts in exchange for favors, but no accepted currency is in use. This is due to the fact that all Ascendants and most Bright Ones are totally self sufficient, and only manufacture additional goods to trade for things they are not skilled in manufacturing on their own.

Military:

The military of the Ascension is not particularly strong. However, it does have a significant advantage over all others. They are the only fighting force in the galaxy able to function at will within Ascension space. Ever mindful of the threat new empires could be to the Ascensions trade and political power, a medium sized fleet of ships has been built by the Bright Ones. Equipped with technology and mystics from those worlds where regular Q-dexes are simulated, these ships serve to defend the outermost borders of Ascension space from interlopers as well as protecting the outside interests of the Ascension.

As a whole, the Ascensions military might is well above average. The elite troops of the Ascensions Aktar fleets are powerful beyond imagining, and possess knowledge and Equations that are significantly ahead of what other Ascendants know. They are believed to have gained their power from the High Ascendants in order to preserve the peace and the power of the Ascension. Distinguished by the white armor and cloaks they alone of all the soldiers of the Ascension are permitted to wear, all citizens tread lightly when one of the is near, and all tremble with fear at the sight of two or more such soldiers. The Aktar as a whole are commanded by a Ka-Danna. This carries a meaning equal to Supreme Warlord, or Supreme Commander. The Ka-Danna is granted unlimited power when it comes to military matters, and may act without any need to consult with the Vetra or Kal-Vetra. However, his power extends only over military matters, and he may not act in any way that might cause greater harm to the Ascension. Below him, the individual Danna serve as they choose, generally commanding whatever fleets or detachments are deemed necessary by the Ka-Danna.

The Illuminated Fleet, controlled by the Illuminated Ring, is nominally under the control of a Danna-ve. The Danna-ve is the supreme warlord of the Illuminated Fleet, and theoretically answers to the Ka-Danna. In practice, though, the Illuminated Fleet does not answer to anyone but the Danna-ve and his Sa-Danna, just as the Aktar answer only to the Ka-Danna and Danna.

Sports and Leisure:

The Ascension has a variety of art forms, but the most popular are the chaos sculptures. The chaos sculptures and the magical displays done by younger Ascendants and quite a number of older Ascendants are marvels of fluid, shifting beauty. None has ever seen two chaos sculptures exactly identical. Each is unique and each a treasure without price.

The Bright Ones also create paintings, artwork from their original cultures, and also intricately crafted equipment.

Major Population Centers:

There are several centers of note within Ascension space. The most significant are:

Omnet One:

Created by the Ascension for the Omnet, this floating facility in the orbit of the star of Venya is a testament to the skill of its designers, who built it from the pure chaos stuff, and then created the tralath to link the structure to the needs of the Omnet. This structure is fluid, capable of changing in the individual quarters to suit any taste and need. It serves as the center of all Omnet activities within Ascension space and the surrounding space.

Golath-Val:

The Golath-Val is a station built at the edges of Ascension space. This station is the meeting point for all tourists and trade representatives. >From here, the Ascension will transfer the tourists to wherever they wish to go (excluding sealed sections and the Radiant and Shining Rings). The trade representatives go to wherever the Ver-Vetra and the Sa-Vetra chose to let them go for negotiations.

Golath-ve:

The Golath-ve is the station for diplomatic liaisons and other diplomatic purposes. The Valath have stationed adjutants and lieutenants here to see to the needs of the diplomats while conducting negotiations. Like the Omnet One, this facility can be altered at will to suit the needs of various species and environmental needs.

Chronic Problems:
