The Space People Compact

the SPC, the Space People

Overview:

The Space People Compact is a spacefaring race/empire which does not live on any of the planets in their many stellar systems. They use Gas-Giants for fuel. There is only one inhabited planet in the SPC, the population of which consists of well-paid workers. These workers have no right to rule in the Compact, but may live their lives as they wish under law. The SPC is also one of the founders of the United Arthurian Alliance (UAA).

The use of crystals for energy-storage and ship-building is very common, in fact, all ships are built out of the same type crystalline materials. Construction seems based on geometrical forms (pyramids, hexaeder, dodecaeder, etc.). As each of the Space People has his own ship, the SPC has a very big Navy, and a very small Ground Force.

Because they were once a race of Conquerors, the Space People know the ravages of war all to well. For this reason, they have not conducted or been involved in any type of war in over 3000 years and avoid conflicts with other races and empires whenever possible. However, when war is forced upon them, the size of their fleets leave the SPC more than able to defend themselves.

The SPC is located in Sector C. Unfortunately, because of the threat of the K'tan in that sector, they will not disclose the actual coordinates of their empire to the Greater Galaxy. They can, however, be contacted over regular Omnet channels such as Transcom-1

Q-dex:

T: 777.3435/957.895-0 (Charged Life Linear, Energy Flow)
M:464.3435/687.82 (Essence Bipolar, Ley Lines)

Technology:

Compact technology is based on and uses the flow of energy which crisscrosses the whole of their native Q-dex. These energy flows are harnessed in one of the many ways available to the Space People and then placed in storage crystals for later use. Because the Space People have practiced it for many millennia, this task is easily accomplished and very advanced; this is mostly due to the fact that they have certain innate abilities which stem from the flow of energy. Energy is also the inherent material out of which all matter and life in the Q-dex are built. (Energy Bipolar Zone.)

There are many factories on planet; all of which are owned by the SPC. Workers may be paid in goods such as crystals or metal bars if they wish. Gold, Platinum, and Uranium are common types of payment, but every kind of known element is readily available to the Space People. This because Asteroid Mining is something the Space People not only enjoy but also do extremely well. (After all, blasting asteroids to rubble is so much fun!)

Most factory production is aimed at building better Ship-Systems (such as weapons, drives, sensors, etc...) for the People. Despite the large demand for these products, manufacture of other electronic parts is also high.

The Space Peoples technology excels in everything which uses any form of energy-transmission. For example, Holographic Projection is an especially advanced technology; which allows holograms to actually touch and interact with their surroundings.

Magic:

Magic is inherent in everything which exists in the Q-dex. It is commonly used by all native Space People in an innate form of communication. The Ley Lines conecting everything in this Q-dex are "tapped" to transfer messages directly to the Sentient a Space Person wants to talk to. Other uses have not been researched yet, so the use of the Ley Lines is not very advanced. There are some Space People who use some other applications of the magic, but these are very uncommon.

[Research is being currently conducted in deeper use of this innate power.]

Size:

The SPC is not as large as it was in the time before the People decided to stop conquering others. At this time the People began to give planets back to whatever remained of their original owners. They currently own one system.

In that system there is one planet with an atmosphere that is usable by humanoid life. There are also several gas-giants in that system.

Population:

There are some thousands of Space People in and around their Solar System, and millions of Workers on Planet A.

Climate and Geography:

Sector Map (click for a larger view)Since the Space People use concepts (which are transmitted via the Ley Lines) in place of words, the description of each planet is very graphical. The humans living on A use the letters of the planets as names for short. The Sun is called Zero.

Sun: Zero; also named Live Giver.

A: Home of the Groundlings; also named Factory.

This Planet is habitable by Humans. It is here that all Factories are located and the Humans work and live. It has a ratio of 73% land masses and 23% oceans. One continent named Eden is reserved for holidays and native life-forms. No factories may be built here. It is very lush with only some hotel-complexes dotting the landscape. The factories on the other continents all use very clean production processes. No pollution should mar the happiness of the working masses. Happy workers are good workers!

B: Tasty Planet without Spice; also named Holiday Point.

The atmosphere of this planet is hydrogen rich and tasty, but no ring-systems are present, which could add some additional trace elements. This planet is used for holidays, since it is very near to the sun and the energy is very strong here.

C: Sports Spot.

This planet is used mainly for the Stoneshaping Festival, but a bit of mining is also commenced by the Groundlings. Since it is very small, each Space Person is only allowed one week here.

D: Tasty Planet with Spice.

The atmosphere of this gas-giant is rich with hydrogen and the nearby sun and the mineral rich ring-system adds the necessary spice to food. Because it is just so darned spicey, D is the favored eating place of the older and more influential Space People. Younglings are barred from this planet.

E: Funny Lights Place.

This planet is the first one with a mostly methane atmosphere. Some internal effects build towering thunderstorms with jagged lightning, which can even be spotted all the way from A. This makes the planet an unsafe place to eat for all but those Space People with the biggest ships. These Space People consider this energy an additional spice for the food.

F: Sports Place.

This Asteroid Field is the place where the famous Asteroid Races are held. It was once a normal planet with many factories, space-ports and ground-defense placements. But in a War 3500 Years ago the Space People of the Old Race destroyed it (and all intelligent live on "A" too!). However, there are still many valuable kinds of minerals to be found there, and many mining stations and asteroid-cities are located here for the workers..

G: Training Place.

This Asteroid Belt is mostly used for training of the Younglings in Navigation and fast movement between objects. The goal is to round the whole Belt in less than a year. Some adult Space People come here to refresh old skills and to kill time. One of the oldest People has been counting the asteroids in this belt since the year 2000! Some guys have weird hobbies!

H: Big One.

This is the biggest planet in the System. It has a mixture of about 50% hydrogen and 50% methane. This gives the gas a unique taste which is preferred by many Space People as a special snack.

I: Haunted Place.

This Asteroid Belt is avoided by the Space People (and hence the Groundlings too!). Some People entered this Belt 3000 Years ago and never came back. Some of the more enterprising young Space People try to discern the nature of these disappearances, as a result, most don't come back -- and the rest don't find anything.

J: Crystal Planet.

This small methane-covered planet is no "real" gas-giant. It is a rather dense planet with a core of solid crystal with a gravity that may be as high as 10 G. These indigenous crystals store an enormous amount of energy, which the Space People mine for use in many applications.

[Please note that: these crystals mustn't be filled with energy, as they come fully stored!]

Flora and Flauna:

There are no extremes on A, just normal -- mostly non-threatening -- animals and common chlorophyll-using plant-life. The only difference between this and most other Q-dexes is that some animals and plants make use of limited psionic powers. For example, there are some small, plant-eating animals who use a lesser form of telekinetics to get the fruits they like from high trees. There are also some fruits which absorb mana as a supplement to their diet of energy from the sun.

History:

Over 3000 Years ago, the Space People were the scourge of their sector of the Galaxy; conquering, killing and destroying indiscriminately. But texts reveal that with the Shattering came a cataclysmic change in the social structure of the Space People, and that after a great internal war a Changed (and now peaceful) Space People won and returned to their solar system which has one planet -- suitable for human habitation -- which had no sentient life left after the events of the War. This Planet was then repopulated by Humans from nearby stars and is where all production takes place.

For centuries the Space People lived in peace, wanting only to stay out of galactic events until, about 200 years ago, the Space People conducted an experiment which utilized enormous energies that opened a Rift in space.

At exactly the same moment the Arcanian Republic, in a far away sector, conducted an similar experiment and a Wormhole was opened between the two zones. Since that time renewed interest in the Greater Galaxy flared in the Space People and research reached a new height.

United, the two empires began working toward an alliance for peace in the Greater Galaxy. That alliance is now called The United Arthurian Alliance (or UAA). This Alliance has already drawn new members (which have been contacted by both Empires as a result of their exploration of the galaxy).

Government:

The oldest Space Person (named The Big Boss) rules all.
There is one "elder" who has been alive for more than 3500 years, and who gives council but does not rule by his own choice.

He is the wisest and by far oldest of all. There are five council members (The Big Council) who are also able to decide on issues of importance, but The Big Boss retains the right to overrule them at any time. This Government is all-powerful. It has always been this way with the People from the early times evolution.

For that reason the government is very popular and without opposition of any kind. Admittedly, the system is not very advanced, but everybody has an equal chance to rule -- one must only be the oldest of the surviving People.

In their Conquistador Times, assassination was a big problem for the leaders, but since this days are over, there has not been a single incident. There is also talk about voting the title of Big Boss away from the oldest People. But there is no consensus as to how many would be eligible for this or how long they would rule. This talk is, however, supported by the current Big Boss.

Foreign Policy:

The Space People Compact is helpful to all Sentients in the Galaxy. They see their helpfulness as a way to redeem themselves from the sins of their forebears. They will always lend ships for emergency transport of goods or medicines or even the evacuation and defense of whole planets in emergencies. The Compact is always open to outsiders and is willing to trade with everyone, especially for drive and weapon-systems which work in foreign Q-dex zones..

Immigration isn't possible, but there is always plenty of work for Sentients in the many planetary factories. All workers are, of course, paid very well (1.5 times as much as normal). This is why there are always enough workers present to maintain proper factory output.

Domestic Policy:

There are no courts per se, but all Space People (and planetary workers) may petition for judgment by The Big Judges -- another five Space People of the oldest age. It ids they who decide on a simple Moral Code of "Good and Bad".

Another Point: there are no Lawyers. All parties may state their point of view. Transgressors who are judged Guilty will be exiled. If no quick judgment can be reached (meaning somewhere between some days or some years; depending of how interesting the case is to the Judges), they are all exiled. This means a low rate of cases in court. Most Sentients clear their problems between themselves.

There is a small but extremely well equipped Police Force on Planet, and orbital surveillance is simply GREAT. The police are very competent and criminals are always exiled. All their belongings are given to the sentient(s) against which the crime(s) was committed. Therefore the crime-rate is not very high.

As long as they do their work and don't infringe on the lives of others, the workers on planet A can do pretty much what they want (except rule of course). This means free speech and everything else. They may even vote for Mayors for themselves.

There are no taxes. Every building and production-facility is owned by the SPC. The workers only pay charges for food and rent of living space. But it's cheap to live there so no one minds. The SPC wants happy workers!

Society:

There are five families of Space People. Each is headed by the eldest family member. Each family has some thousands of members. Since the SPC hasn't waged war in a long time, there are many old members and not that many Younglings. Therefore these are given much leniency and special care.

The Space People don't believe in a religion. There are religious factions of every possibility for light-years around in the population of the workers on Planet A of course.

There are no real political groups, even if talk of a new voting-system for the Big Boss has been spreading for some hundreds of years.

There are two economic groups: The Space People (who own everything on planet) and the Workers (who own what they receive as Wage).

Languages:

The Space People themselves  transmit their thoughts as concepts via the Ley Lines and therefore have no spoken language. They use Omnet Standard Language for contact with Sentients who can't communicate in that way
(quasi-telepathically).

Religion:

There is no religion for the Space People. The Workers use many different religions from around the sector.

Castes:

There is only one type of caste in the SPC: The older People always rule. There are 8 different Age Categories which are determined in an unknown way outside the Space People. Each Category gets a new (bigger and better equipped) type of ship. Each ship/type also has another base/color.

The other type of caste is the Workers on the planet. They may not rule and they dont have many rights, but since they are well-paid they are mostly happy. They may always leave the planet if they are against the current system, and the SPC will provide flight to any nearby solar system.

Economy:

Money is computed in "Crystal Units" (CRs). Meaning the weight of the charged crystals which are mined on Planet J. So 1000 CRs is 1000 grams of crystal. It is available in the form of "Crystalsticks", which are small computer sticks on which the data about the wealth of the owner is stored. And it is available as the actual crystals (which can't be forged of course).

The CRs may be changed into any commodity the owner wishes as he decides to leave the SPC. Mostly they are changed into metals (Gold, Platinum, Uranium, etc.) or other minerals (Diamonds, the crystals as themselves, etc.). They may also take their pay in goods, such as holographic projectors, but never as weapons.

Only the Workers on planet and in mining stations around the system actually work. The Space People do some Asteroid mining, but don't consider that work.

Military:

The Space People Compacts Military consists mostly of the warships of the Navy. Only the Police can be considered a ground force.

Because every single Space Person owns a ship of some combat worthiness the Navy is quite large and they don't fear planetary assault by ground forces.

The naval contingents are controlled by the family/leader. Therefore there are five fleets of enormous fire-power available. Would be conquerors have been warned!

[Weaponry and Vehicles are classified information!]

Sports and Leisure:

There are two main sporting events enjoyed by the Space People: Asteroid Racing and Asteroid Blasting.

Racing is done in Asteroid Ring F and is completed by rounding the Ring in the shortest possible time without destroying any asteroid.

Blasting is done by selecting asteroids of roughly the same size and pulverizing them with the smallest amount of shots fired.

There is also an artistic event each year. At this time the best artists meet on C and shape stone formations using their point-defense guns.

The Workers of the many different cultures in the sector, have a wide variety of sports and arts; each with its own set of rules and differing events, which are simply too numerous to go into here.

Major Population Centers:

There are many big cities on A. The biggest is called "Big City" (remember the Space People always use concepts for naming everything?). It has a population of around 50 million, is the major production center, and houses the main Spaceport (which is called "Big Port").

There is no population on the continent "Lush Place" which is used for holidays and as a place to locate the native lifeforms.

Chronic Problems:

There are no chronic problems in the SPC.
