AKA The Fracs
Overview: |
Praetalo, located in sector H, is an empire unlike any other existence. It exists inside of a black hole. Until recently, the sentients of Praetalo were unaware of any other life forms or empires. In fact, being from within a black hole, the Fracs (as they are known) didn't know anyone or anything else existed at all. It is unknown how or why the Fracs began to project into this universe. When questioned, their reply is that they are here to learn and store information.
No humanoid can actually visualize the actual shape or form of a Frac - to most races in the greater galaxy, they appear as a 3 dimensional blot of color and pattern. Each Frac has its own pattern. The Fracs don't actually know how they came into being, but it is assumed that they just randomly happened. The species is asexual, and replication / propagation happens with no warning whatsoever. The Fracs do not know what precipitates the replication process. They have studied this intensively, to no avail. The replication process involves gestation and live birth. The Fracs are a very intelligent, almost super intelligent species. They live to discover knowledge and now to disseminate knowledge to other species. They are very useful to other sentients as living repositories of information and thought. Although it is not believed that a Frac has any non-organic parts, the very size of their 'brains' and their unique ability to store vast amounts of information makes others believe that there must be something foreign involved in the makeup of a Frac. Within the last ten years, the Fracs have been in great demand by rulers throughout the galaxy. Although the knowledge of the Fracs is vast, it is also somewhat limited by the fact that they have not been projecting into this universe for very long. The Fracs are most sought after for their telepathic abilities which do not appear to be limited by time, space or species. |

Technology: |
The Fracs have explained that their planet / system is extremely technological and advanced. They do have the use of many machines which use energy to operate. As close as we can figure, the energy source used comes from outside the black hole, i.e. this universe. They speak of 'energy sinks' on Praetalo. |
Mystic: |
The Fracs possess magic in great quantities, but it is of a very confusing nature to the rest of the universe. To a Frac on Praetalo, to think something is to create it. The problem inherent in this magic however is that the interior of the black hole is very unstable, and the thoughts created by Fracs can randomly happen or not happen. This has resulted in general non use of these capabilities by the Fracs. The magic of Praetalo does not translate outside of the black hole. |
Size: |
The Fracs have explained that there are many quelsar within the black hole. We have not yet been able to determine exactly what a 'quelsar' is. |
Population: |
The Fracs projecting into this universe number roughly 180,000. It is unknown at this time how many Fracs actually live on Praetalo. |
Climate and Geography: |
The Fracs claim to be a carbon based life form. They have not been seen to consume any sort of food during their projection phase. This is currently under study. |
Flora and Fauna: |
It is know that the Fracs have a type of pet or familiar known to them as 'dricktles'. This is known to be another life form and is commonly thought to be involved in a symbiotic relationship with the Fracs. It is known to be a fact that a Frac that loses contact with its dricktle will lose its projection into our universe immediately. It is believed that the Frac also perishes on Praetalo, but this has not been proven as yet.
Other than this, nothing is yet known about the flora or fauna of Praetalo. |
History: |
The Fracs have explained that they have 'always been'. We do not as yet know under what parameters this time frame exists. It is commonly believed that the Fracs have existed for at least two millenia (Earth years).
The Fracs are very closemouthed about their past. Given the Fracs' acute abhorrence of violence, it is thought by many that there were vicious wars in the past of Praetalo. The population was probably decimated by these wars. There is a general feeling that the population of the Fracs is on the decline, and this may be responsible for the recent projection into this universe. |
Government: |
It is known that the Fracs of Praetalo are a self governing population, existing (harmoniously?) with each other. There is a group of ruling Fracs on the planet, and the projecting Fracs have occasionally been 'recalled' by the ruling faction. The Fracs refer to the rulers as 'the Markers'. It is believed that the Markers have absolute power, which is rarely exercised.
Foreign Policy:The Markers have never projected. There is absolutely no contact with any other part of this universe other than through the Fractal projections of certain citizens of Praetalo. We can only assume that the projections are a type of ambassador for Praetalo, but this is merely an assumption. When questioned, the Fracs' only reply is 'We are here to serve and remember'. Domestic Policy:Unknown. The matter of whether or not attempts should be made to establish some type of communication with Praetalo directly, rather than through the Fracs, is under study. Efforts are underway to find a renegade Frac who may be more amenable to assisting with the establishment of communication. |
Society: |
The projections communicate with each other in a telepathic manner. Little is known about Praetalo society. There doesn't appear to be any class distinction, other than intelligence. All projections are extremely intelligent.
There has been one renegade Frac to date, but little is known of this projection. The renegade Frac was known to have influenced the mind of the ruler of a star system to such a degree that the ruler declared war on another system. It is believed that the Markers recalled this Frac, or that its dricktle was terminated on Praetalo. When questioned about this incident, other Fracs turn a particularly putrid shade of green and refuse to discuss it. This leads us to believe that their society has rather strict parameters for behavior. Fracs are asexual, as stated above. They do reproduce but nothing is known of this process to date other than the fact that the reproduction is random, and biological. Languages:All communication with Fracs is telepathic. They seem to be able to communicate with all life forms. They do not appear to be xenophobic. Religion:The Fracs commonly refer to the Creator. It is known that the Fracs believe they were created to be a thinking race. Castes:As stated above, intelligence appears to be the only class distinction. |
Economy: |
It is believed that the economy of Praetalo is based upon intelligence. The more intelligent a Frac, the richer a Frac. It is believed that they have a type of monetary exchange. All Fracs demand to be paid in uranium and will accept no other medium. |
Military: |
There is no known military. All Fracs are decidedly non violent, however they also appear to be very protective of their black hole. All attempts to interest the Fracs in assisting this universe with travel into ANY black hole is met with complete paranoia. |
Sports and Leisure: |
There is no apparent leisure. There is a type of game played on Praetalo, but the rules and details are unknown. It is believed that all Fracs play this game, and some refer to winning. No Frac currently projecting ever refers to losing, and it is possible that the game involves the loss of life to the loser. |

Chronic Problems: |
The problems in this universe with the Fracs are substantial. They are known to disappear without warning. They will not participate in any violent endeavors. They often communicate in thought patterns which are difficult to translate. Of the known 180,000 projecting Fracs, only 179,813 are currently accounted for. When questioned about the 187 missing Fracs, the projecting Fracs appear to be somewhat distressed.
It is wondered by many whether or not all is gravy on Praetalo. Due to the fact that there are missing Fracs and that the projecting Fracs will not discuss the missing Fracs, perhaps there are renegade factions on Praetalo who do not agree with the ruling Markers. |
