Empire Name: Ovonglor

Overview:

Ovonglor is a one-planet world which has only recently launched its first starship. There are several hundred states (lands) connected with each other by the power and services of special organizations (Circles) consisting of Adepts. Those organizations are also numerous each having a special kind of industry, service, or science, as its specialization. Political power in the lands is in the hands of aristocrats (Feelers).

Magic is the heart of this world. It is the source of power both for Adepts and for Feelers. It is also the reason for the fact that there are so many lands. And magic lies in the nature of the ability which people of Ovonglor experienced only recently: the ability to fly in the space.

The zone of Ovonglor seems to be Matter/Energy with low Handling Ratio, low Advancement Ratio and above average Quantity Ratio. Information about tech storms is still being collected. The attitude to outsiders and to Omnet cannot be defined yet for the society has not yet experienced any significant interchange with them. The political system seems to be quite stable. Ovonglor is a newly discovered civilization.

It is also an Ordered Mana Linear zone with above average Handling Ratio, high Advancement Ratio and quite high Quantity Ratio. Information about mystic storms is still being collected. At the moment only one kind of sentient beings was discovered with minor deviations from the human form.

Technology:

Pure technological devices and inventions are rare. The mainstream of technology lies in the applying of magic to matter. Most devices are operated and controlled by that amount of magic which any Ovonglorian can master. Some devices are automatic: they have the magical power in themselves and do not need any magical effort from the people. Some need Adepts to use them (the spaceship is an example).

The industry has not yet reached the mass production stage. Private workshops are more abundant than large factories or plants which usually belong to Circles with the exception of those belonging to barons and thus to all the people of the particular land.

The most technologically (and magically) advanced products are produced by Circles. The lightball, the speakingmouth, the lightningsword are examples.

Not so long ago several Circles which were involved in the prominent project of creating spaceship succeeded thus opening the new era for the Ovonglor civilization.

Magic:

The magic plays the significant role on Ovonglor. The continuum is considered to be the knot of the infinite number of endless and beginless threads -- Mana. Those threads weaves themselves into patterns which are Essence. Essence attracts Matter and Energy to form material things.

Every Ovonglorian has some magical ability. But to become an Adept a person should pass a kind of the initialization followed by years of practice.

There is also another important aspect. The mind of every Ovonglorian produce small vibrations on the Mana threads. Those vibrations can resonate with each other and become distinctive enough to be felt by a sensitive (in a special way) individual. The effect is called Feeling. The sensitive individual thus can sense what is called the Wish of the People. Logically persons of that kind are the most effective rulers. And in fact they rule. Historically almost all barons had that ability. More than that, the talent for Feeling is traditionally considered to be very rare and hereditary. Thus every person who is the descendant of Feeler is considered to have some talent for Feeling too.

Size:

The Ovonglorians have not yet the possibility to make interstellar trips. They just managed to get into space recently. Their world is still only their planet called just the same: Ovonglor. It has two moons and it is one of the seven planets around the star which they call Olnetz. The investigation of the star system is still in process. The question of colonizing other planets or moons is still considered to be too early to discuss.

Population:

According to the annual report of the Official Adugar Census Committee the population of the Ovonglor is about one and half billion people.

Climate and Geography:

Ovonglor is the Earth-like planet. The water covers two thirds of the planet. There are three continents, two being inhabited by Ovonglorians.

Flora and Fauna:

The only note which can be made at the time is that one of the Circles has been experimenting with plants and animals and thus developed quite interesting species of both.

More detailed report will be provided later.

History:

The most rich resources on history are the Circles libraries. But they are still closed to the public besides the small fraction of materials provided voluntarily to the Official Adugar Archive Committee which started its own chronicle short after the creation of Adugar. The OAAC has been processing the information from the lands' libraries as well.

The history of Ovonglor from the old times until recently seems to be the history of fighting for power. Fighting among Circles, fighting among lands, but most often fighting involving both. According to the investigated materials the fighting started after the fall of some ancient empire and was continuing for hundreds of years being characterized mainly by the inability of participants to unify for any significant period of time.

That era ended with the coming of Baron Linlon who succeeded in unifying under his command in so called Gray Unia more than one third of lands existing at the time. The result was almost total loss of power by the Circles in the region. Those Adepts who were not killed, or sent out, were put under control and kept as the hostages. The main thing was that all Circles suffered. That made them cooperate and create coalition. This coalition was coordinated by the council which got the name Adugar. The place where the council was seated was named Adugarrod. Also at that time the new knights' Order (called the Pristine Order) was founded by those barons and knights who were unsatisfied with the power of the Gray Unia and Baron Linlon. Adugarrod has become the place for headquarters of the Pristine Order as well. Adugar and the Pristine Order proclaimed the creation of Anti-Gray coalition.

The struggle between Gray Unia and Anti-Gray Coalition was continuing for many years and ended only shortly after the death of Baron Linlon when it became evident that no other baron could hold so many lands together. Gray Unia vanished. But Adugar was not dismissed for Circles found out that there were some major profits in working together. And though the power of Adugar have never been too high with time more and more committees appeared under its name marking the beginnings of some new cooperative projects. At the same time the Pristine Order was gradually becoming the peacekeeper -- the buffer between different barons and lands which provided almost hundred years without global wars. All this made possible the fast development of technology which led to the creation of spaceship and thus entering into the Greater Galaxy.

Government:

There is no such a thing as the united government of Ovonglor. The lands of Ovonglor are ruled independently by barons. In most of the lands the power of baron is hereditary.

Most of the lands are involved in one or another treaty with the neighbors and it can be said that the legal, financial, and other social systems are similar all over Ovonglor.

Circles, officially not having any political power, influence particular barons and lands greatly. Sometimes even openly.

Adugar is gaining more and more power. Now its recommendations are almost obligatory to the Circles and have arising influence on barons also.

Foreign Policy:

Current negotiations about joining the Omnet go with Adugar mostly because this organization appears to be the most perspective and the most open for cooperation. The Adugar Ik -- the High Council of Adugar -- has given the positive recommendations to its committees in the direction of integrating into the Greater Galaxy and Omnet.

Domestic Policy:

People traditionally do not like Circles but they are usually loyal to their barons. And the reason is Feeling. The barons are subject to the Wish of the People. That is the ancient law of ruling on Ovonglor. One person cannot Wish too hard on the baron but all population of the particular land can. Thus the baron Feels (and usually does) things which please people just by the magic nature of his power.

It should be noted that the effect of Feeling is decreasing with the increase of the distance between Feeler and people. That is why there are so many lands on Ovonglor: land cannot grow too large for in that case those who live on the borders would not have any significant influence on the baron and the baron would not Feel their Wish and thus would make decisions which may cause displeasure among them. And in past times displeasure meant revolt. Such lands simply could not survive.

Society:

Two groups can be distinguished from the common people of Ovonglor: Adepts and Feelers.

Adepts are scientists, magicians, inventors and in all respects the most progressive part of the society. They are distancing themselves from the society though. They are not subject to the power of barons, generally live in special campuses and not involve themselves in any common activities.

Feelers are mostly relatives of barons. They make up a kind of elite for they are usually involved in the governing and considered to be public figures.

Common folk is the main part of the society though. They are living in lands ruled by barons. They have their own traditions in each land but some common features can be noted. The family is not highly influent. Most people prefer being independent from any union or organization. The individuality and
self-respect are generally considered to be the most valuable features of human being. Privacy is highly appreciated. An Ovonglorian is unlikely to do something which he, or she, does not think suits his, or her, principles and wishes. Thus Ovonglorians sometimes look and behave a little uncooperative.

Languages:

The language differs from land to land. Sometimes much. But it still has the same base and with some effort people from any lands can understand each other.

There exists also so called High Tongue. It is the official language of Circles. And it is considered to be valuable to know among Feelers too. Though the High Tongue has many similar words with common language, the grammar is quite different. Knowing the High Tongue can probably be useful for learning the history of Ovonglor for all materials concerning old times are written in the High Tongue.

Religion:

There is no religion as such in Ovonglor. There is not even a word in common language with the meaning 'God'. Interesting that there IS such a word in the High Tongue.

Although there is a kind of philosophical movement called Jacism.

Castes:

Adepts and Feelers (see above).

Commoners usually respect Feelers. Adepts are considered to be very special people and usually accepted with the underscored and polite indifference by the common folk. And this is the usual way of behaving with people who are different on Ovonglor.

The relations between Feelers and Adepts are not so easily defined. They vary from land to land, from Circle to Circle.

No slavery exists on Ovonglor. And there is no evidence it ever existed.

Economy:

The freedom of business is one of the basics of Ovonglorian life.

In almost all kinds of businesses people are working in the close cooperation with Circles which act like something between R&D companies and universities. Also many businesses are organized and operated by Circles themselves.

Nowadays trading and banking industries are growing rapidly.

Military:

Each land has its own military unit. Usually not large. Many barons managed to cut the costs on military by making the contracts with the Pristine Order. The knights of the Pristine Order declare themselves the peacekeepers and nowadays they truly are. Their aim is to prevent the wars from beginning and violence from happening. They are also watching closely those lands whose traditions, laws and powers are vulnerable to the appearance of different kinds of discrimination.

The weapon, like all other technological things on the Ovonglor, is the result of magic applied to material things. The weapon mostly looks like some primitive device but it can wield much power. Further investigation needed here for there are some indirect evidences of very powerful kinds of weapon existing.

Sports and Leisure:

The leisure activities look like medieval mostly. Small and large festivals are taking place at different time in different lands. Some of them are quite popular and attract population from many lands.

One of the most interesting is the Contest of Colors. In this Adepts of different Circles are participating and it is really quite a show. Adepts demonstrate thrilling magicworks. One of the contests is called The Making of a Flower. The aim is to create under the eyes of the public the most beautiful flower. The form, color, smell -- everything is at the most marvelous level. Highly recommended for tourists.

Major Population Centers:

Adugarrod is situated in the small plain circled by the mountains and hills. All the plain is covered with the buildings of Adugar committees and administration. This is the center of many researching activities on the Ovonglor. And the place of powerplays too. Adugarrod has the best communications with all of the lands and, what is also important, Circles Citadels. And the only one existing at the moment spaceport is situated on one of the plates surrounding Adugarrod region.

The information on other centers is being collected.

Chronic Problems:

Nowadays when almost all of the lands are opened for people to come in and from, those who are not satisfied with the policy of their baron are not likely to raise a revolt. Instead people just go where they know the policy suits them more thus adding their Wish to that baron and reducing the opposition to policy of the baron of the land they are leaving. As it goes the lands are becoming more and more coherent in the political views of their population and more and more distinct from the others. And that is seen as one of the major problems of Ovonglor civilization nowadays for the more distinct the lands are the more chance that the hostility between them may arise which can give way to wars. The political researchers in Adugar think that the faster integration into the Greater Galaxy may help to solve that problem.
