History:

Around 200 BC, the KAI, then an underdeveloped civilization, joined the Hirocrian Empire. Although their membership lasted only a few hundred years, they gained a tremendous amount of magical knowledge, and prospered into a complex and benevolent civilization. In 48 AD, they left the declining Hirocrian Empire and formed the Luminescent Ring.

For centuries, the Luminescent Ring existed in relative harmony. Each system was inhabited and ruled by a distinct species, and each system was in possession of an incredibly bright star. The largest system (Genovese), as well as the one with the brightest star (Flux) were controlled by the nearly-immortal KAI, the most developed of the twelve species. Being the most intelligent, the KAI took it upon themselves to rule over the eleven other species, and in reality they were fair and benevolent rulers. The KAI set up the Grand Ring Council (GRC), a supreme governing body in which the twelve KAI, one representing each species, ruled the Ring. As a result, life among the Ring flourished.

All was not well, however. In 501 AD, Vorkink, a radical and powerful KAI, sought to gain control of the Luminescent Ring, but his extreme views prevented him from progressing up the normal ladder of power. Frustrated, Vorkink instead plotted to overthrow the Grand Ring Council.

Vorkink wanted to insight rebellion among the eleven subservient species, and began to spread anti-council propaganda and make inflammatory speeches against the existing government. His immense charisma, combined with his persuasive arguments, gained him a considerable following among the subservient species. Why, Vorkink reasoned, should only the KAI be allowed to sit upon the Grand Ring Council? Vorkink also claimed to have knowledge of quantum front that would pass through the system in the year 988 AD. He claimed to have the knowledge necessary to stop the front, which would prove destructive to the KAI.

Vorkink was soon considered a freedom fighter by many, even some of the KAI. However, the GRC recognized that Vorkink was not trying to establish a fair government, but that he was instead trying to gain absolute power over all of the species. Unable to prove their suspicions, the GRC was forced to banish Vorkink and his most loyal followers from the Ring for the period of 1000 years. This banishment took place in 525 AD.

Without Vorkink, the uprisings stopped, but discontent was still wide-spread. However, things soon returned to normal.

463 years after Vorkink's banishment, as Vorkink predicted, q quantum front passed through the Ring. The KAI, who placed tremendous value on their physical bodies and their immense sun, were altered so that all that remained of them was their souls. None of the other species suffered this fate, and, as a result, the KAI became powerless to act in any physical manner.

The discontent which had been brewing for so many years surfaced, and in a swift assault by all of the other species, Flux, the remaining symbol of KAI pride, was destroyed. The KAI struggled to maintain their prestige, but were unable to adapt to their new forms. Without the GRC, the Ring fell into economic and cultural disarray.

Vorkink returned 513 years after the Front's passing, and was shocked by the Ring's disarray. He immediately seized the opportunity to gain power, and went about re-organizing the KAI.

During his banishment, Vorkink had spent much time studying the Great Storm, and had learned many secrets about the interaction of the physical and spiritual realms. Vorkink was able to devise an enchantment process using Blackvoid by which souls could be fused with physical materials. Trial and error showed the most effective objects were large obsidian orbs. Such orbs could be placed in fabricated bodies and give the user complete control over the body.

An army of bodies was constructed from wood, and eventually Vorkink amassed enough forces to eliminate the eleven other species. The KAI, their pride hurt and their sun destroyed, followed Vorkink without question, and aftr a furious battle, only the KAI remained.

Vorkink's ambition exceeded just the quantum zone though, and he was obsessed with procuring all the Blackvoid that he could. Vorkink led the KAI into the Kryjahs Invasion in 1540 AD, although he himself did most of the fighting. Vorkink's power exceeded that of the rest of the KAI combined, and he fought back the Kryjahs. In 1667, the Great Storm began to move further away, and Vorkink followed it, in hopes of harnessing its power. Three mysterious mages from outside the KAI system, found a way to trap Vorkink inside the Great Storm, and he was never heard from again. KAI history states that the mages were the last remaining members of the GRC. The Great Storm entered Oblivion in 1771 AD, presumably with Vorkink still inside.

The three remaining members of the GRC had grown accustomed to their new bodies, however, and were able to lead the KAI. Realizing the organic nature of wood made it inherently unacceptable for long term bodies, the KAI began to construct bodies from metal and rock. Within a decade, Genovese was restored to its original splendor, except for the loss of Flux.

The three members of the GRC abandoned their physical form and became the star for the system, Neo-Flux. They are brighter than Flux ever was, and from their central position, they can rule on all KAI matters, and even control the path of the planets in Genovese.

Government:

The Kai system of government is a definite hierarchy with many divisions for different departments (military, economy, diplomacy, etc.), but the three remaining members of the Grand Council hold ultimate power over any affair. In reality, the government tries to treat every citizen equally, leading to a rather Communist society.

Foreign Policy:

The KAI are ever expanding their boundaries, mostly through exploration and treaties for two reasons:

  1. Their long life spans are creating a burgeoning population that requires more space.
  2. They fear that one day Vorkink will return and try to eliminate them all

Domestic Policy:

The Kai try to treat all of their members equally and allow them to voice their complaints, but when a protest or demonstration gets too anti-government, they will most likely crack down, so as to prevent another "Vorkink" incident.

Society:

The size of a KAI soul depends directly upon the power of the soul. Also, the size of the obsidian orb needed to house the soul directly controls how much power the soul can harness. Most KAI have orbs 5-20 feet in diameter, and bodies 10-100 feet tall formed from rock. The more powerful KAI have orbs 25-50 feet in diameter, with bodies up to 1,000 feet tall made from metal. A couple dozen KAI have orbs up to 100 feet in diameter, and bodies so large (5000+ feet tall) that they rarely land on a planet. It is rumored that the three GRC members have bodies made completely of obsidian that are more than 50,000 feet tall, and some say that they can control the form of their bodies. As the GRC members currently have dispossessed their bodies to form Neo-Flux(see History), it is thought the bodies are being kept in reserve, should the GRC ever need them.

Religion:

Religions tend not to exist in any great size or number, as the KAI are a very scientific society. Two noticeable branches, SOV(Sons of Vorkink) and the "Voiders" have emerged. The SOV, mostly made up of the lower-class who are not satisfied with their government, are ostracized by most of society and kept under close watch by the government, while the "Voiders", a group that worships Black Void, tend to be accepted, though most think they're a little odd.

Castes:

The Kai do not have a rigid caste system. Any one may follow any interest they wish, but respect is always given to those KAI who are more powerful.

Sports and Leisure:

Being that their bodies tend to limit their artistic abilities, As well as allowing all sorts of physical abilities, the KAI tend to enjoy the sports and arts of other cultures.

Major Population Centers:

Chronic Problems:

The KAI tend to live most of their lives preparing for Vorkink's return. Whether or not he is even alive is not really a concern, and sometimes the KAI will make deals or alliances not truly beneficial because they believe it will help them fend off Vorkink.
