The Gu-an'ki Regime

Overview:

The Gu-an'ki are a young race commonly accociated with trade and commerce in sector G, along with a rapidly growing military power-base. The Gu-an'ki themselves are relativly tall and extremely powerful humanoids, physically superior to many other humanoids. They are mainly hairless and their mottled reptilian skin varies from shades of bright green to dull gray/green. Their heads are bony and semi-elongated, giving them a lupine appearance. They have long pointed ears, and even longer, thin, antennae-like horns.  All Gu-an'ki eyes are black. Gu-an'ki culture is primarily based on art and warfare; an unlikely combination, but fitting to their short and colorful history.

Technology:

The Gu-an'ki are a heavily industrialized people, with relatively low but efficient technology. They have only had hyperspace drive for about 70 years, but before they had hyperdrive they still had fairly advanced pre hyperspace technology to help them endure the rough environments on their world and nearby colonies. To make up for slightly low technology, Gu-an'Ki technology offers extreme versatility. Gu-an'Ki ships have both warp-based and wormhole-based technology. They duscovered warp drive on their own, while they developed worm-hole drive from pieced-together sciences from previous invasions.

Mystic:

Magic is primarily based on psionics, which, while not uncommon to have, is seldom used.

Size:

The Gu-an'ki is a relatively small empire, having control of only 17 colonies spread out among 2 star systems. The home system contains most of these, having a lot a planets, with a few relatively new settlements in the colony system. The homeworld, Psi-Rkhan Primus, is capable of supporting life, and much of its ability to do so has been destroyed by wars and invasions over the years. Only one other colony is capable of supporting life.

Population:

35 billion.  Colonies are for the most part sparsely populated, and settlements are spread out over large distances across the planets.

Climate and Geography:

Psi-Rkhan Primus is a desert planet, partially because of it naturally being desert, and partially because of centuries of environmental damage from wars, both against other Gu-an'ki and invaders. There are a few places where ecosystems thrive as such things as grasslands, oceans, etc but they are rare, primarily located between plateaus and in canyons.

Flora and Fauna:

Plants are tough, fleshy and small, containing pockets of water to help them survive. One example is cho'am grass, which is common in thriving eco-systems. Animals are primarily tough and vicious, an example being the scavenger breausim, a tough insectoid predator/scavenger. There are stories and rumors of gargantuan creatures living beneath the surface, but these haven't been confirmed.

History:

About 600 years ago and earlier, the Gu-an'ki existed in small, self sustaining settlements. After a major invasion invasion by the first Kha-Lu empire, (an invasion which was very successful, at least until the Kha-Lu had plundered enough resources to where the colony was considered useless and abandoned it,) the Gu-an'ki started to build large cities out of forgotten Kha-Lu settlements. After a series of smaller invasions, the Gu-an'ki became aware of their position and started to produce ships out of scraps left by previous invasions. Eventually, the Gu-an'ki established minor colonies on some of the nearby moons.

However, about 200 years ago, an aggressive alien race punched through their defences, and swiftly conquered their home world. Finding little use in the planet's rebellious natives, they exiled the Gu-an'ki to another system, on a "surrogate homeworld". There they stayed, missing their world, but over time they established new colonies, established contact with Omnet, developed wormhole based jump-drive, and became known to the greater galaxy.

Having wormhole based jump-drive and new resources, the Gu-an'ki assembled a small fleet and decided to take back their real home. After a series of skirmishes the Gu-an'ki took the war to a greater level by conquering one of the enemy's key colonies. Unready for the more intense battles, the war was going badly until the Gu-an'ki stumbled upon a resource-rich world and built several deadly warships. Using these, they destroyed important enemy colonies and eventually went for their old home. After several decisive victories, the Gu-an'ki took back their world. While en route to conquering their enemy's homeworld, they heard reports of strange ships doing excessive damage to the place they were about to attack. When they jumped out of hyperspace, they found a barren field of asteroids and no enemy homeworld. Feeling cheated, but still elated, the Gu-an'ki established their regime and became a prominent member of galactic society. The beings that decimated their enemy's homeworld had ships that matched the configuration of "The Others," an ancient, advanced race, reportedly having prior contact with the Kha-Lu.

Government:

The government of the Gu-an'ki is a system of castes referred to as "companies". The Gu-an'ki have always been a proud and loyal people, so they are obedient and participatory regarding their government. The government is part elected, part hereditary, with democratically chosen representatives working under company leaders who are chosen by birthright.

Foreign Policy:

The Gu-an'ki are open to trade, open to opportunities to conquer, and quick to take sides in any conflict, always trying to increase their influence.

Domestic Policy:

The government is very easy going on their citizens, encouraging free speech and free-thinking. Since citizens are loyal, crime is rare, but when a serious crime is committed the criminal is exiled from Gu-an'ki space. The Gu-an'ki people consider forced exile worse than execution.

Society:

Society is based on houses and clans. The leader of each house is generally a high-ranking company official, while the leader of a great house is generally a company leader.

Languages:

There are two language of the Gu-an'ki, one of them general, and used in everyday life. This one consists of polysyllabic words, and is highly inflected. The other language consists of short growls and grunts with varied pitch. This subtle form of communication is used as a military language. All citizens know both languages. Gu-an'Ki language is also multi-tonal. Gu-an'ki vocal-cords can produce a variety of sounds at the same time, on varying wavelengths, that Gu-an'Ki can hear, but most other humanoids can't.

Religion:

Religion used to take the form of many gods and prophets, many of which seem to be based on the Shota in the Kha-Lu religion. These were probably borrowed when the first Kha-Lu empire ruled Psi-Rkhan Primus. However, about 200 years ago the Gu-an'ki woke up and abandoned religion.

Castes:

Their are three companies: Warriors, Builders, and Administrators. The leaders of these castes are raised as leaders who get to decide how their company's facet of civilization is used and managed. For example, administrators run cities and colonies, warriors run the military and explore, and builders plan construction, industrialization and cultural matters. Most people are simply below the companies, and given are orders by their specific company. Unlike most caste based societies, there is no order of hierarchy of one caste being more powerful than any other. Each of the 3 castes has close to complete control over their matter of expertise and an equal say in government.

Economy:

All citizens work for a specific caste in one way or another. The economy is primarily resource-based.

Military:

The military of the Gu-an'ki is one of the three companies. It is also considered one of the best militaries in the sector relative to its size and tech level. The main fleet consists of many powerful fighters and gunships as well as small destroyers. Their main warships are large angular starships able to carry many fighters and vehicles and deliver a very large dosage of fire power from their many weapons. (Some weapons include fusion lasers, plasma cannons, ion guns, pulse cannons, missiles and phalanx cannons.)

Sports and Leisure:

The Gu-an'ki have a rich culture consisting of art and percussion-oriented music. The Gu-an'ki enjoy sports and culture of other races and participate in them frequently.

Major Population Centers:

The cities of the Gu-an'ki are very large, but spread out among their homeworld. They are usually built on mesas and consist of many levels. The lower levels are very old and dangerous, while the upper levels are commercial and bustling. Heavy fortifications protect cities and are covered with entry pores. On the exterior, the cities resemble huge artificial plateaus.

Some Gu-an'Ki colonies:

  • Ailas: One of three key military colonies.
  • She'Khah: Asteroid research station.
  • Zch-Cham: Research colony based on the only Gu-an'Ki colony (besides Psi-Rkhan Primus) capable of supporting life on its own.
  • Rh'Lua station: A military space station.

Chronic Problems:

One major problem facing the Gu-an'ki is that their tech level is fairly low compared to many other races. Also, the environment on Psi-Rkhan Primus is deteriorating rapidly due to the many wars in its history. Calculations indicate that within 130 years, Psi-Rkhan will be a dead planet with no natural life. Terraforming Psi-Rkhan Primus is not an immediate problem, but it is a permanent goal.
