<THE ALL>

AKA "The Green"

Overview:

<THE ALL>, known as "The Green" by various small-brained sentients of the galaxy, isn't so much an empire as a presence. Occupying an unusual segment of space, <THE ALL> consists of huge single entities the size of whatever planet, moon, comet, or in rare cases, asteroid belt they occupy. Calling <THE ALL> a giant plant is a misnomer, but that is one of the easiest paths to comprehension available to tiny individual vertebrates.

"The Green" is an ancient group of entities which existed long before and will exist long after such self-important sentient government constructions such as the Omnet fade into obscurity.

Technology:

Through a fusion of biological (technological) processes and mystic manipulation (a lesser element), <THE ALL> produces a dizzying array of biological constructs that range from "plants" that produce food syrup, to hard-shelled interstellar pods; as streamlined as anything that came from a vertebrate factory.

Magic:

Magic is the nervous system of <THE ALL>; in its pulse flows the intelligence of the individuals and through it streams nearly instantaneous communication between the individuals of <THE ALL>.

Size:

<THE ALL>, via self-directed mutation, occupies the major bodies of all the stellar systems within its pocket of space. Any one star system consists of anywhere from 10 to 45 individuals, each individual consisting of a dense mass of living tissue that completely occupies a stellar body, be it a moon, planet, or even an asteroid belt. So long as gravity is not too extreme, and matter is available, <THE ALL> can survive and flourish.

While the total number of individuals in <THE ALL> is tiny compared to a small brained vertebrate empire, the total tonnage of living tissue dwarfs equivalent star empires.

Population:

<THE ALL> consists of a total of approximately 200 individuals, the biological equivalent of trillions of human-sized organisms. However, since this biomass includes infrastructural equivalents to human-type structures such as buildings and roads, the comparison is quite skewed.

Climate and Geography:

Weather is unimportant to <THE ALL>. Individuals exist equally well in sweltering, green-house gas swathed planets and airless planetoids.

Flora and Fauna:

<THE ALL> occupies the entire ecological niche for any planet it occupies.

History:

<THE ALL> remembers everything but comments on nothing. It is the doom of small brained vertebrates that they forget.

Government:

While <THE ALL> consists of individuals (massive individuals, true) there is an underlying group-consciousness that directs all strategic action. Tactics and details are left to the individual.

Foreign Policy:

Early contact (in the context of Omnet history) with <THE ALL> was filled with disaster. <THE ALL> had trouble identifying individual intelligence’s, and had an unfortunate habit of killing all but one of any group of diplomats or explorers it came into contact with. With time, <THE ALL> learned to respect individual beings as being independent and individually sentient.

Currently, <THE ALL> has little patience for the diplomatic posturing of other empires. It is quite good, however, at avoiding conflict, which is rarely productive in the long run, and <THE ALL> sees everything in terms of the long term. Hence, <THE ALL> correlates its direct observations with the diplomatic messages of nearby empires and focuses expansion efforts, very slowly, in directions that do not conflict with other governments.

Domestic Policy:

<THE ALL> IS A DOMESTIC POLICY.

Society:

<THE ALL> can mimic a society, and often does so, for the sake of outsiders. Human-sized drones communicate with diplomats and traders, but <THE ALL> is all, and hence has the society of a single individual.

Languages:

<THE ALL> communicates effectively without traditional language, though its massive computational powers allow it to learn new languages quickly.

Religion:

<THE ALL> worships nothing but itself, time, and the continuance of all.

Castes:

Within the body of <THE ALL> there do exist those who are not as equal: individuals who occupy small or inhospitable moons or planetoids are consequently less productive. There is, however, no such thing as resentment within the corpus of <THE ALL>. Merely a difference of ability in some cases.

Economy:

Internally, resources are distributed as needed by <THE ALL>. Externally, some additional rare minerals useful for exotic constructions such as starships are traded for. <THE ALL> produces biological items beyond parallel in the known universe: food plants, large biological constructs that excrete housing units whole, and so on.

Military:

Due to the rapidly shifting nature of <THE ALL>, there is little standing military force. That small percentage, however, is still very large when compared to equivalent star empires. It is almost entirely defensive in nature, however, consisting of non-interstellar craft in each <THE ALL> star system.

<THE ALL> expands via starseeds, not via direct military conflict. It is in fact very difficult for <THE ALL> to project military power at a distance from one of its individuals.

Sports and Leisure:

<THE ALL> does not enjoy sports and has no need of leisure.

Major Population Centers:

Each planet, moon, or planetoid is a major population center for <THE ALL>. However, outsiders know best the trading center of Billat, so named for the first contact ship in recent history to survive contact with <THE ALL> intact. Billat consists of a large orbiting facility which isolates <THE ALL> from contact with travelers. It is there that trade is arranged using a barter system.

Trade is conducted using mouthpieces of <THE ALL>; while individual traders may imagine they are speaking with different merchants of <THE ALL>, all are of course facets of a single intelligence. <THE ALL> has found that communication works best when funneled through mouthpieces that look like the traders themselves, though it did take awhile for <THE ALL> to realize that creating exact duplicates caused more problems than it solved.

Small-brained vertebrates often fall prey to the common assumption that <THE ALL> consists of plant-life. This is not so. The mouthpieces, for example, can be as animalistic as any human, complete with blood, bone, and brains. In fact, a burgeoning sector of trade with <THE ALL> involves the creation of replacement body parts that perfectly match the patient. All that is required is a bit of source DNA ....

Chronic Problems:

<THE ALL>, if it can be said to have any problem at all, is a very static entity when compared to the lively empires of vertebrates that have sprung up nearby. Beings so massive can usually afford to react slowly: the largest ships of the vertebrate's fleets could scarcely destroy one tenth of an individual of <THE ALL> without destroying the entire planet itself.

Invaders have traditionally been dealt with slowly; over the millennia some have found early success only to ultimately meet crushing defeat, meted out by the hordes of ships and troops available to <THE ALL>. It is rumored that survivors of such ancient invasions live on as symbiotic parasites within the corpus of different individuals of <THE ALL>.
