The Corrano Continuum

aka The Continuum

Overview:

The Corrano Continuum is an area of space controlled by the Continuum Tribunal, made up of members of each of the Continuum's 3 clans. The Continuum is highly technologically advanced, by magically stunted. It has only recently discovered the existence of other advanced beings and is currently assessing the threat potential of these groups. Visitors are welcomed to Continuum space, but are warned to take no action that may be construed as an act of aggression; response will be swift and violent.

Technology:

The Continuum has been space faring for nearly 100 years and in that time has set up several small mining colonies on the uninhabitable worlds of their system. Highly industrialised and proficient at manufacturing, the continuum's chief building materials include a collection of alloy's and modified concretes.

Magic:

Little can be said of magic inside the Continuum. Aside from children's fantasies, magic was thought not to exist. Only when contact was made with races outside the Continuum did professional interest in magic begin. Since then progress has been slow. The Estudiuc (office of science) for Paranormal Investigation has been recently established to study magical properties, but has yet to produce any tangible results.

Size:

The sole star system controlled by the Continuum consists of a binary star and 15 planets. The largest of the stars is a red giant named Kelic (translated as: Grandfather of the universe), The smaller is a stable yellow sun named Selton (translated as: Bringer of life).

Of the 15 planets, only 3 have life sustaining atmospheres. They are called Sesk, Galeic and Corrano. Sesk is the fifth planet from the stars, Galeic the sixth and Corrano the seventh. The system also consists of 3 gas giants, all in further away from the stars than the 3 inhabitable planets. The other bodies are essentially lifeless rocks, but do provide much of the raw materials needed for a space faring culture.

Population:

Approximately 25 million. Most of which (80%) live on the home world, Corrano.

Climate and Geography:

The 3 inhabited planets are essentially the same. Each has a tropical area around the equator, gradually cooling to a frozen polar cap. Sesk is about 10 degrees Celsius warmer than the others due to its proximity to the stars.

Galeic is prone to intense storms throughout the year; this may be because of its unusually high magnetic variances. It is not uncommon to have large hurricanes and lightning storms.

Flora and Fauna:

Galeic and Sesk are largely untouched by industrialisation and therefore enjoy mostly virgin wilderness. Corrano has been the seat of a civilised culture for more than 1000 years and is only now recovering from over industrialisation that was rampant before the dynastic governments were overthrown by the clans (see History). The most important crop is nestle, a fast growing, genetically engineered wheat that grows easily throughout Corrano.

History:

The history of the Corrano Clans dates back before the written word. Legend has it that there were originally 4 clans: Lestra, Tre, Dyson and Divine. The Divine clan disappeared from the planet somewhere around 3000 years ago and the disappearance is riddled with legend and mystery. The legend says that the Divine clan left the planet to seek the celestial nexus (a holy place where the honoured dead reside). The legend goes on to mention that the Divine clan will one day return to take its place in the Continuum and herald a new era when the clans will unite and conquer the universe. The continuum's symbol, marking all military forces and most governmental bodies, is a 4 pointed radiating star, with a circle touching three of the four points. The fourth point is for the Divine clan.

Each of the three existing clans comes from one of the three continents of Corrano. Until 400 years ago the clans were controlled by a ruling aristocratic dynasty of kings. The clans rose up in a very bloody revolution and overthrew the nobles, forming the current government.

Government:

The clan government is broken down into tribunals. The highest group is the Continuum Tribunal. It consists of the leaders of each of the clans (called Ra) who elect one of their own as the leader of the continuum (called the Sen). Each clan has 3 leaders, who elect one of their own as the Ra. The Clan Tribunals consist of one leader from each of the three castes. Each clan member belongs to one of the three castes. The castes are Scientific (responsible for scientific, and magical, advancements), Labor (responsible for farming, manufacturing and finical matters), and Military (including internal and external security). All castes are considered equal, a person can belong to only one caste, the decision on what caste one belongs to is made at the age of assention (16 years) and is binding for life.

Foreign Policy:

The Continuum has only recently discovered that they are not alone, therefore they are somewhat suspicious of outsiders. The exception seems to be the Omnet. The current Continuum tribunal believes that the best way to counter outside threats is to learn about them, therefor the Omnet information is highly valued.

Domestic Policy:

Continuum persons enjoy a moderate level of freedom. Heavy-handed measures are not generally needed because of the society's almost fanatic devotion to duty. The legal system consists of members of castes that are considered experts by their peers. Judges are chosen based on availability of experts in the field of the charges. The bureaucracy also consists of members of the castes serving temporary civil service.

Society:

The Continuum consists of three clans; Lestra, Tre and Dyson. Each clan consists of three castes. The castes are responsible for all administration and advancements in their areas. Members of the Continuum have displayed an almost fanatic devotion to duty, which translates into a fierce clan loyalty. It should be noted that the Continuum citizens have displayed a heavy "us and them" mentality that creates rivalries between castes and clans. Skirmishes between castes have been reported, but as of yet no full-scale warfare has erupted.

Languages:

There is one main language: Correal, with 3 main dialects (each clan maintains its own euphemisms).

Religion:

The only religion that exists seems to be rooted in the legends of the origins of the clans. This reinforces the clan-centered mentality that pervades the member's lives.

Castes:

As mentioned before, all members are divided into one of 3 castes. Each caste has several sub-castes that attend to specific areas of responsibility. For example the Military caste contain members of the Navy, Army and Security forces. It should be noted that the size of the castes remains fairly constant across the clans. The Labor cast makes up approximately 50% of the citizens, the Sciences approximately 20% with the remainder in the Military. This does not mean that 20% of the population are scientists, of that 20% only about 5% are scientists, the rest are assigned as support (secretarial, administrative, janitorial, etc.)

Economy:

Clans and castes trade information, services and goods among the Continuum. There is a saying in the continuum: "Take what you need and leave the rest for your brethren."

Military:

Armed forces make up 30% of the population, of which 100% are combatants. The rule: "Everyone fights" is maintained throughout the military. The military is divided into 3 separate branches. The Navy controls all space going military craft. The Army controls all planetary craft (including atmospheric fighters). The Security Forces maintain civil obedience, internal security and prevent crime in populated areas.

The Military is directly under the control of the Clan Tribunals and indirectly under the Continuum Tribunal.

Weaponry is both energy and projectile based. Anti-matter weaponry us usually delivered by the use of projectile weapons (ie. anti-matter torpedoes or missiles). The Continuum forces have demonstrated a high dependence on stealth technology. It is believed that spacecraft use both passive and active light sensors to detect enemy ships (similar to the use of sound in ocean going craft). The Navy maintains several types of fighting ships, ranging from two man scouts to 200 man battle cruisers. The Army makes use of several kinds of anti-gravity vehicles (tanks, armoured personnel carriers, missile launchers, etc.) as well as light, one man body armour for the infantry.

Sports and Leisure:

While there are no professional sports teams, members do participate in amateur competitions between clans and castes. Similarly art is not a professional endeavour, however members to pride themselves on their artwork. Most art is centered on the deeds mentioned in the clan histories.

Major Population Centers:

Corrano has about 30 different major population centers. The largest is Monfar, the seat of the Continuum Tribunal.

The other planets have more sparse populations, usually based around small colonies.

Chronic Problems:

Rivalry between the clans is very prevalent. While full-scale warfare is not likely, minor skirmishes between clans have always been a problem. It is not surprising for individual ships to engage in mortal combat or for one clan to mine the spaceways around another clan's port.
